Today’s takeover is all about Samantha Rose Rizzo, a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma who brings incredible energy and passion to the field as one of OU’s talented twirlers. Originally from Patterson, New York, Samantha has been twirling for an amazing 14 years, training under Matt and Meredith Freeman as both a member of the M Twirling Team and as a dedicated solo competitor.
Life as a College Twirler
This is Samantha’s second year twirling at the college level, and she describes the experience as the realization of a lifelong dream. Growing up, she admired college twirlers and hoped to one day follow in their footsteps. Now, she gets to step into that role herself—serving as a role model for younger athletes, inspiring and empowering the next generation of twirlers every time she takes the field.

Favorite Game Day Moments
When asked about her favorite part of game day, Samantha didn’t hesitate: performing at Heisman Row. This close-up, high-energy pep gig allows band members to connect with fans just before parading into the stadium, and it’s always a highlight of her week.
Her most memorable game day so far? The OU vs. Alabama game was in her freshman year. It was her very first time twirling fire at OU, and the atmosphere was unforgettable—a drone light show filled the sky above her as the fans erupted with energy. That performance is now a “core memory” she will never forget.

Traditions & Preparation
Game day starts long before kickoff. Samantha and the band rehearse four times a week in two-hour blocks, focusing on drill and choreography. On Fridays, she often performs at local pep gigs around Norman—her go-to stop is the Noun Hotel.
Samantha also has some personal rituals that help her lock in. Right before pregame, she and Halle, her drum major, share a special handshake. And when entering the field from the tunnel, she always hits the top for luck.
Fueling Up for Game Day
Every athlete has their must-haves, and Samantha’s no different. Her go-to pregame fuel is peanuts for snacking and a loaded tea from Tower Nutrition on Campus Corner—a perfect combo to keep her energized throughout a long game day.
Words of Wisdom for Future College Twirlers
Samantha’s advice to aspiring collegiate twirlers is full of encouragement:
“Trust that when applying to be a twirler, it will all work out and you will end up in the place you belong. Take every opportunity that comes your way, and if many don’t arise, make those opportunities for yourself. Your time representing your school is short, but they are the best years of your life.”

Why She Loves It
For Samantha, the best part of twirling in college isn’t just the performances, the energy, or the traditions—it’s the chance to inspire others. As she says, being able to serve as a role model and show young athletes what’s possible through dedication and passion is what makes every game day worth it.
We’re so lucky to have Samantha sharing her journey with us for today’s Game Day Takeover. Boomer Sooner!
