Teenage Miss Majorette of America, Sienna

Johnson has spent most of her life working toward some pretty big dreams.

The 19-year-old from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is a student at the University of Missouri and a longtime member of Julie’s Touch of Silver. We caught up with Sienna to talk about the road to the crown, her favorite twirling traditions, life at Mizzou and a few things you might not know about her.

It All Started at Three Years Old

Sienna started twirling and dancing at Julie’s Touch of Silver when she was just three. Her mom signed her up for classes after noticing that she was constantly dancing around the house.

Sixteen years later, she’s still going strong.

When it comes to competition, Sienna’s favorite events are solo and collegiate. Her baton bag also contains a few essentials that have nothing to do with batons.

"I always have deodorant and perfume," she said.

For competition-day fuel, you’ll usually find grapes and a Dr Pepper or Coke nearby.

The Pajamas That Have Stuck Around

Sienna has one competition tradition that goes way back.

When she was younger, her mom gave her a pair of pajamas that read "’Twas the Night Before Competition" in sparkly pink letters. Years later, Sienna still wears those same pajamas the night before she competes.

She also has traditions with her Julie’s Touch of Silver teammates. Before competing as a group, the team gathers for a pep talk to get everyone excited and ready to perform, usually ending with everyone yelling, "TEAM!"

Those little traditions have been part of a journey that eventually led Sienna to one of the biggest moments of her twirling career.

A Dream for Her Eight-Year-Old Self

When Sienna heard her name announced as Teenage Miss Majorette of America, there was one person in particular on her mind: the eight-year-old version of herself who had dreamed about that exact moment.

"I was shaking with excitement, relief and a little bit of shock," Sienna said. "The main thing I was thinking about was little eight-year-old me whose dream had finally come true."

For Sienna, the crown represented years of practices, competitions and hard work finally coming together.

"The work I have put in since day one had finally gotten me to the crown," she said. "I am still reminiscing on that night and the amount of emotions that were swirling through me that I can’t even put into words."

She’s especially grateful for the people who helped her get there.

The Coaches Behind the Crown

At the top of that list is Sienna’s longtime coach, Julie.

Julie has coached Sienna for the past 16 years, seeing her through nearly every stage of her twirling career and plenty of life outside the gym, too.

"Without her I would not be the twirler or person I am today," Sienna said. "She truly is my biggest inspiration in every aspect of life."

Julie’s daughters, Lacey and Whittney, have also played an important role in Sienna’s journey.

"They have done so much for me, and I can never thank them enough!"

Life Outside the Competition Floor

When Sienna isn’t twirling, she loves being active. Hiking, biking and running are all on the list, but she’s just as happy spending hours in her room with her dogs and a good book.

Family is also a big part of her life. Sienna has a 22-year-old older brother who recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Growing up, the two spent plenty of time playing football and soccer together in the backyard.

"He’s very supportive and protective, but I love him no matter what," she joked.

And there’s another side of Sienna that the twirling world might not know about.

She and her best friend Ava run a TikTok dancing account, @dancingqueens2007, that has earned them some recognition around the University of Missouri campus.

"We have become Mizzou celebrities and are recognized almost every day on campus," Sienna said.

The duo has even collaborated with the Mizzou Gymnastics team on a dance and has been approached for promotional opportunities in Columbia.

From Mizzou to What's Next 🐯

At the University of Missouri, Sienna is studying Accounting and working toward a Certificate in Global Business.

When it comes to twirling, she picks field twirling over competition twirling and strut over two baton. Off the floor, she’s choosing sweet over salty, the beach over the mountains and TikTok over Instagram.

Her Advice to the Next Generation

After achieving a dream she first had as a little girl, Sienna wants younger twirlers to know that the work they’re putting in now can take them further than they realize.

"Don’t give up on your dreams," she said. "Continue to work hard and take every opportunity that arises because you never know where it will lead."

She also wants young athletes to trust the preparation they’ve already done when it’s finally time to step onto the competition floor.

"Be confident in yourself. When stepping out on the floor, never doubt your skills or ability. You know the amount of work you put in, and the only thing you can do is your routine."
